Family descended from John Benson, a barrister in Thorne, Yorkshire, England, who emigrated to the United States in 1833 and Friedrich Julius Gustorf, the son of a banker in Cassel, Hesse, Germany who emigrated in 1819. Benson settled, with his wife and six children near Peoria, Ill. in 1834 and he died in 1836.
